How do you guys do it? Do you use any at all? It's hard to tell watching my own vids if it's distracting or if my voice isn't enough to carry a moment.

I normally add it because it seems empty without music. I have it quiet enough to not be a distraction yet loud enough to make a difference.

I agree with Tom, music is something you don't 'have' to include, but if you do use it, your videos will sound a lot better, and will add vibrancy to them. It can also create atmosphere, depending on what video you're trying to create.
Right now, I'm using Kevin MacLeod's royalty-free stuff, but I'd love to discover a new source soon because, there's always a time when you're constantly using the same music for every video, it'll get stale eventually.
'Video Game' music from popular titles is pretty popular too, I think. Are they considered Royalty Free??

I generally go for game soundtracks as quiet background music to avoid things sounding empty. I've got a few that I use semi regularly that match my pacing but that's about it. I just try my best to make sure it's not TOO loud so it doesn't detract from whatever I'm saying.

I have to say, in my experience, it's a bit fiddly trying to get the right volume of music to coincide with the narration. I don't want it to be too quiet for me to not hear it, but then again I don't want the detraction.
