Hmm. You made some good points about character control but you didn't get into the meat and potatoes of the Mosou styled games.
Weapon loadouts and accessories are key to surviving monsters with status attacks like sleep and freeze. You need to bring the right tools to the job to plow through this.
Then again, I did beat this game 100% and got all achievements in 55 hours, so I may favor it more than your average newcomer.
As with all Dragon Quest games, its piss easy to farm levels by hunting metal slimes. Doing side quests will give more inventory and material bag slots. Doing ally sidequests will reward you with gear to make farming easier (ex, a ring that increases mini medal drop rate by 5%)
My review will be more in depth for this sort of thing, but for the average digital joe who is new to the genre, this is a handy video.
Personally I loved this game, I binged it start to finish, and I HATE dynasty warrior games with a passion, however this and Hyrule Warriors hit a spot that works really well.

I liked it.
Sorry, I'm not the best at giving feedback, haha.

Thanks for the feedback! I did forget to mention the accessories in relation to the status effects. Unfortunately it's hard to tell which monsters will cause which status effects in order to prepare. I did mention the side quest rewards, but like I said they came too late and there's no real point in the first place. I think we just have very different opinions on the game and that's perfectly fine. I kind of wanted to play Hyrule Warriors, but I haven't owned a console since the gamecube. Question, did you ever play Mystic Heroes for gamecube? I remember liking that one.
