Hey guys, while I'm working on my video related to Nuclear Throne, I'm putting up an LP series of X-Com.
I'm trying my hand at the formula to get more used to talking comfortably on my own and also want to be more engaging with the audience in some aspect.
I've written down the usernames of a few of you guys to add to the X-Com Soldier roster in Part 2 (ContentFreeTime and 8BitBrody) but if any of you want to be added to Part 3's Roster, leave a comment in the YT video.
Also if you have direction for me to go in development or routes for base building, let me know. You're comments will influence my playthrough of X-Com
As always, feedback is always welcome. I know Part 1 is a bit rough since this is my FIRST LP, but I'll be getting better at it!

a good LP is really just a podcast with a game running in the background. the game is there to help focus a discussion, but i always love an LP that can tangent a little on interesting topics.

Part 1 is moreso a warmup to the LP format. Ive recorded part two and its much better after watching it over. As much as this is an LP, I dont want to become Markiplier or such, I want to have the focus a bit more on gameplay than myself to a minor extent.

Hey Matt, you seem likable enough to do this. I'm not really a LP watcher, but I glanced through your episodes and it seems to be good stuff.

Going to be honest, LP’s are a dead format on YouTube and you should maybe consider alternative creative content.
“But why Tentacle, I find them fun… Surely that is what matters?”
Of course it is, but you could have more fun doing it in other ways.
Now first, allow me to state that I am not saying LP’s are outright not going to exist anymore or that there isn’t a place for them. You’ll actually find that there are plenty of outlets that want them, with more growing year by year. What I am saying however is that you aren’t going to achieve anything in 2016 with a pre-recorded LP channel anymore.
In the time it takes you to set up, record, edit audio levels, render and wait for it to process on YouTube; you could have streamed it and potentially got a larger audience.
“But I may only get two people watching my streams, which would suck”
Allow me to now play the role of reality and give you a firm slap to your face. Just because a video may say it has 1000 views, does not mean all 1000 viewed the entire thing to the end. Go look at your analytics and you’ll discover quickly that a lot of people will click off a video within 10 seconds if they don’t like it. Does not matter if it’s due to the intro, audio quality… Heck, even text choice. People will find a reason to not watch you if given it.
This is where streaming comes into play. It does not matter if you pick Twitch, Hitbox, YouTube Gaming… Hell even Chatabate, live direct interaction is what people want now. Viewers want to feel connected, be part of what is on display. So having their name read out or even used in the games story (Perfect in the case of XCOM) would likely make them stay to see what happens than outright bail. The fact that people are able to keep someone’s attention, keep someone sat for 2+ hours in a stream is a larger accomplishment in the long term than a few hundred fake views.
“So where do I stream?”
Twitch is over saturated, but has the largest market demographic. You’ll find most people watch on that site, but establishing a viewing audience will take much longer.
Hitbox is small and focused around European users. It has the smallest user base of the three outlets I’d recommend, but the most loyal and keen to engage viewers. An average stream for me on that site for 2 and half hours averages about 17/20 viewers.
YouTube gaming is a bit stricter, than the two above but is the quickest way to obtain channel subscribers as well as make money. However consistency is key with that one. Even has a live donation button built in, if you really do seek a living from doing this!
“Now what do I do with my channel?”
You can use it to highlight the best bits from streams, do reviews or additional side content or even archive entire streams. Whatever you like! Heck, vlogs or even game collecting. Anything that you feel that can push you forward.

Now since im on episode 7 for my LP so far, shits getting rougher so itll be interesting to edit. As formentioned as well, Im not looking to be Markiplier or PDP either. This is a way for me to fill the gaps between my primary uploads. My current project is taking WAYYYY longer than expected since the GF who's teaming up with me has to work around her and my schedule to record. Thanks for the wall of info! Much appreciated!

LPs aren't a dead format. there just a dime a dozen really. no harm in letting people know you're still active via side content. just don't expect a lot of people to stick around save the most loyal of followers (unless you're really captivating).

Why waste time on side content if you could invest that time into the core-content people want? People are more incline to unsub if you spam up there subscription box with bland LP's as they wait for the next review or whatever. Plus nobody on this site has loyal followers or large scale audiences, making such advice is meaningless.

maybe it's something he wants to try. He can go for it if he want's. it's unlikely he'll spam his channel with that content. As a little something to remind people that he's still active it's probably fine.

I'll be creating a separate channel for the rest of the episodes dedicated to LP's or No Commentary playthroughs. So it wont be an issue. Thanks for the feedback guys, its been super helpful

I agree with Tentacle in that streaming would be a much better use of your time in general. Twitch stores your streams for the past 30 days or something, so there's nothing lost in the endeavour because you can reupload highlights to youtube and everyone wins.

Hmm...I guess I'm behind the times when I think that streaming ain't for me. Then again, I'm not interested in LPs at the moment.

As an LP'er myself, I found this really fun to watch.. I agree with Locklear, when you like the personality as well as the game they're playing, you enjoy the video a lot more, and you want to watch more from them. I say give yourself a few goes with some parts, I think you've got what it takes. I subscribed to you as well!

I'll try to finish the rest of my playthrough on a stream and upload it to the playlist!
